Series of health workshops in Amsterdam

In spring 2023, HarvestCare facilitated health & nutrition workshop in the city center of the Dutch capital. We have focused on creating awareness, community, and space to explore how nutrition, cooking, and environmental health interconnect.

Creating a community to explore healht

Achieving health is a multidimensional process that requires knowledge, commitment, and motivation. Sometimes, trying to live healthy can feel like a full-time job. How can we make it more fun? How can we grow our understanding of human health while enjoying our time and connections with others?

We wanted to experiment to see if we could do just that. That’s why we set ourselves a challenge to create a workshop space—in just one month—where adults could come and learn about themselves, their needs, and the process of doing it.

Creating a community to explore healht

During ten workshops and events, more than 200 people have deepened their understanding of their bodies, how their food influences their health and environment, and expanded their cooking skills. Those events' energy was uplifting, with people being eager to learn, share and connect. A few of the topics that we explored together:

  • Lifestyle medicine for women's hormonal health (it was an extremely special moment, as it was done on the 8th of March): how to align our life with our inner cycles; what diet to choose for follicular phase, ovulation phase, luteal phase, and menstruation

  • Mental health and gut microbiome: the newest science of our second brain - how the gut is affecting, how unhealthy diet can lead to depression and anxiety, how to eat to increase our gut health

  • Gut health and fermentation: technical knowledge about the process of fermentation, hands-on sauerkraut making

Top 5 learnings for our experiment

  1. 🔪 We need to create adult education about health, cooking, and ecology - just as we educate the future generation on healing the planet and taking care of their health, we need to offer the same for grown-ups.

  2. 💃 People learn best while having fun and enjoying delicious food—bringing interesting people together and giving them delicious meals always works wonders.

  3. 👩‍🌾 There is so much interest in learning how farming affects food quality and where to access healthy food in the local environment. The market share of local organic farmers is going to grow.

  4. ♀️ Sadly, a lot of women still have a low understanding of how their hormones affect their everyday lives and how to align their lives with their natural predispositions. We are losing a lot of potential because of this gap.

  5. 🥕 Food is a topic that brings people together, taking away labels and hierarchies. The kitchen is a perfect place to harness deep relations and create memories.
